FD teamed up with HRA for a run way down the canal road. It’s an area we’ve run in before, but a slightly different start point always puts a slightly different twist on a run as I try to remember just exactly where everything is. Today we started further away from the mountains which meant we had a couple of km before we got off the ‘roads’. I got the first check wrong, and coming back was behind Piggy. Running along with Chuckie, we were about 100m behind Piggy, and he just kept nailing the checks – as soon as we got to a circle, he was calling OnOn from up ahead. To be fair I would have checked the same way, but he was doing well…. Until, the trail turned a corner, ignored the smaller trail that went straight on, and put a check not far around the corner…

Chuckie was coming back to check straight on, and between us we found the trail with Piggy finally getting something wrong. Into the jungle, sometimes on trail, sometimes not quite a trail, but there was a reasonable group including the German ladies, Tasty Buns and Romy, while Turkey was desperately trying to get a break. A tough circle had us scrambling everywhere, and amazingly Piggy got back to the front, with Turkey on his tail.

Another circle check, and we again dispersed, calling “Checking”. That was when the hash changed for me. Somewhere behind a loud voice called “On On” – surely from a previous check, but a bit confusing – I called “Checking” back, and again the “On On” call came, this happened a couple of times before Humperdick bellowed across the hills that he didn’t care if we were checking as we had clearly short cut to get there. Fortunately, most of the pack ignored him, and we managed to work as a team to find the trail and continue, but the constant grumbling was enough for me – I lost interest and walked back.

I hash because I like to run, and I like to have fun running interesting places with a fun group of friends – I don’t go to get bitched and and bullied – that kind of destroys the fun part. I go out and put in effort to find trail, and help those behind find their way along as well, while having fun at the same time. If I get there ahead, so what, if you get there ahead, so what, it isn’t a race, and it certainly isn’t an exact science – the point is the exercise and the beer, with good humoured camaraderie. It certainly isn’t about intentionally trying to confuse people who happen to be ahead of you on trail.

Square Rooter teamed up with Sloppy Rod from my least favourite runsite – the park near the zoo. Sure enough he sent us off up the side of the waterfall with the prospect of a Wimp/Rambo ahead. The first circle check was a no brainer and I stepped ahead of Chuckie to make sure I picked up trail up the hill. Sure enough we were heading up, until we ran out of paper by a pile of ripped off strips. We called looking and carried on up the side of the waterfall – being a popular area, it seemed like the trail might have been sabotaged. It had, but it turned out we’d gone through a V check, and the pile of paper was what was left of the check back. Behind us NOYB was leading the way on true trail, while myself, Chuckie, Turkish and Lumberjackoff carried on up the hill.

With no trail to be found, we hit the main road, and turned right to head down the hill along the main road. Surely we would find trail at somepoint? It was a long way down, and a long way around, but finally I spotted some paper on a tree, and sure enough a circle check (as yet unbroken) at the side of the road. We carried on down the hill – not On. Back up the hill and there was Tasty Buns and NOYB coming out of the temple. Over the road a trail headed down and there we found paper, finally we were back hashing.

After a longer than needed climb, and a long run down the road, I was just trying to keep up as CW set the pace up front. A few more circles and then nothing… A check, but no trail for a long, long way – until we found the hares still setting the in trail. They’d been so worried about having lost a bunch of hashers that they’d forgotten to set the end of the trail.

Again the trail ran out at the road, so Turkey and I just ran on in for a beer. Had we been able to follow the trail, I think it would have been a nice set – some interesting flattish trails discretely hidden at the foot of the mountain, only something got lost in the hare”brief”. Something was also lost when the hares forgot about JC’s 700th run.

What would Turkey do for us / to us? At Huay Tung Thao the trails are familiar, but there are options. A familiar starting point had us running towards the mountain, and of course there was a circle check waiting at the base. It is a great spot for a circle check, but kind of gives the game away early – if we turn left, it is towards the moobahn, if we turn right it’s towards the lake. I opted to check straight on towards the waterfall – I set a run there previously, it was a truly shitty run, that climbed up the waterfall in the vague hope there might be trails up there. I figured Turkey was the kind of hare who might copy that fuck up. Fortunately I was wrong, and we were heading to the lake.

It crossed my mind that he might just run us around the lake – I’ve heard that he previously just ran us around the 5k running track! But, nope, I led Chuckie across the dam and around to the entrance to Huay Tung Thao. Then things got a bit confusing… There was a circle check, and soon after I found trail, around the same time Chuckie also found trail. At closer examination, I had found the wimp trail just before it joined the main trail, so I carried on and joined the walkers who were checking off a circle check.

We were tight up against the barbed wire fence – the otherside of which was the army base, where there are men who have guns, and have been known to use them. The sensible option is to not run near highly trained soldiers, particularly during a period of political strife. I saw Sups checking away to the right, and opted to check even further to the right – so far that I found a great running trail. Such a great running trail that I couldn’t resist running on it! And would you believe it, after a while I found paper! I assume the hare had just set an impossible 700m check…

Rather than running off, I went back to join my fellow hashers and help them through the unfamiliar area – am I ever thanked for these duties I perform? Nope… Anyway, we 2nd guessed a couple of obvious skiddy sticks to get back to the OnIn. Some call it short cutting, some call it intelligent hashing – my boys called it “winning” – apart from Tip Toe who did an even better job of ‘winning’.

What an epic outstation weekend – I’ve finally made it back, although my head hasn’t quite arrived yet! It began on Friday – I arrived around lunch time and Horny, Poo, HRA and Square Rooter were just heading down the road for a beer. I figured I’d join them, and 4 hours and many beers later we got back to the resort. Saturday was a slow day until run time. Songthaews took us all out to the start – well the Rambo start – the Wimps were taken 3km along the trail and set off moments later.

A good early pace as Gorf replaced Brown Finger as the FRB. We looped around some fields and headed back towards the huge mountain that overlooks Chiang Dao. We got to where the Wimps had been set off from, and for a few km the checks were all kicked out, allowing Gorf to leave us behind. The heat was devastating and running was a struggle. Finally we started wheeling in the DFLs and got to a water stop.

It was pretty much straight on, straight on towards the mountain. Pleasant views running along with Taste My Buns & Horny Monkey. A few tough checks late on and we could see Gorf ahead of us. Amazingly I was FRB for a moment, but the exertions and the heat took their toll and I was down to walking towards Poo who could be seen from about a km before the OnIn. We’d been promised a 6km run, but it was a big fat lie. 8km in deadly heat – time for the AGMU.

Big Top took charge of the circle, and promptly fired her committee, leaving her in sole command for the evening’s Animal Dinner. Back to the resort and the guys grabbed some beers and hit the pool for a couple of hours while the ladies got ready. With thunder and lightning threatening we all descended on the dining room. Excellent food, good music, and a wide array of beverages. It seems not many people had heard of Absinthe, and I ended up having t least 1 too many, along with copious amounts of gin and tonic, on top of the Leos – oh and Beer Lao too. No wonder I feel like shit!

We had to get up by 10:30 for a hangover run. I managed it just. Apparently I was supposed to co-hare it, luckily Pigshit stepped in to help Knock Out. I set off before the hare brief, and took a nap along the road. Horny dragged me to my feet and I managed to get running, behind Cougar & the Germans. Fortunately the run was only 1.1km, and I wasn’t going to do it twice! Circle time, and time for the hare of the dog. Big Top promptly quit and assigned duties to Mr. Poo who announced his new committee. I think I am on it, hopefully he’ll update the list soon!

Excellent job guys – so successful in crippling us that we didn’t even thank the hares properly in the circle for organising a great event.

When I got up NOYB asked me where the run was – Maerim – “Great”… Who’s the hare?… “Horny”… “Oh….”
Horny Monkey is the only guy who would find a decidedly average runsite, with limited options (surrounded by a golf course, the ping river, and 2 highways) and choose to set not 1, but 4 runs in the space of about a month. If we didn’t know every possible turn, it was because the area was being constantly changed by the developers.

We were there, and had no choices! It was runtime!

THe first 3 circles were all within about 100m of each other. We’d seen 2 of them on the drive in, but when we got to the ‘gate’ we were screwed! As haring goes, it was a good check – the DFLs were just about to light the barbecue for their picnic. Screw the run, we’ll just sit here and wait for the FRBs to figure it out. The co-hare was there – Pigshit needed to call HM to get permission to let people know that we were supposed to tackle the security guards, rip open a security fence and escape without being shot. Interesting concept!

Half the pack decided not to risk their lives, and ran the other side of the wall leaving us to figure out a false trail. The hares had introduced some interesting V checks – a mix of international standards, Chuckie standards, and local roolz. They worked for screwing us up, but for a variety of short cuts Graven and I ended up ahead. Turkey lead a group clambouring though a tiny fence to swim through a ricefield – some people will do anything for a short cut!

Anyway, Graven and I were ahead somehow – through completely legitimate means – and we worked together nicely, particularly enjoying running the other side of a river/cesspool to the rest of the pack. We got back and there was the easter egg hunt with balloons all over the place and cake from “Taste my Buns”.

THe start of the Songkran runs, and Skiddy was the hare out in San Kampaeng / Bo Sang… A new run site, that looked flat and surrounded by rice fields… We expected bridges, we expected rice fields, what would be delivered? First up – we were delivered his co-hare – GasMan… Uhoh…

We set off straight into the dried out ricefields, and a circle check. I kept going straight, while people fanned out to the right, reluctant to try crossing the dried up mudbed to the left. A bit further along and there was a dodgy bamboo bridge crossing. Clearly Skiddy hadn’t found it, otherwise he would of used it. I surely wasn’t on, but there were no calls from elsewhere. I made my way across and through the rice field, spying what might be paper in the trees beyond. It was, and I was on. No sooner had I cried “OnON”, then I cried “OOOOOOW!”, like a girl, as I smashed my knee into a wooden stump. Blood oozed down my leg, but I continued. When the trail turned abruptly left to a circle, I knew the trail was going back, but took the long way around to the road, slowly catching up as we headed out into another set of rice fields.

The trail ran down the edge of the ricefields, and not far ahead Graven started leaking off to the left. Smart man, I peeled off before he did and we paralleled across the field – around 100m or so from the end of the field, and it was no surprise when Brown Finger called circle check ahead. The only problem was the stream I had to scramble across, but I was back on trail the other side – intelligent hashing – right?

Laying trail through the field is tricky, and there were more calls of “Looking” than “OnOn”. We lost trail at one point, so I fanned off to the right – a long way off to the right, ending up on a trail the wrong side of a large rice field. Bugger… It wasn’t looking good. I could barely see them a few hundred metres away to the left, but at least my trail was runnable, and when I hit the road, I heard “Checking” to my left, moments before I saw powder on the road ahead of me. Result!

It wasn’t far from there to the beer stop, but far enough for Brownie and a bunch of others to pass by. Beer stop – always a good addition.

We then headed to the W/R split, and the unpleasant part. Scrambling through thorns, barbed wire, scrambling along a tiny concrete path. I got lucky with the skiddy sticks and found myself ahead again. Only, I had to lead the way through ricefields – not just along the burns, but straight through the crop… wtf? I don’t know if it was waiting to harvest, rice, grain, feedstock or whatever, but it wasn’t pleasant trying to avoid trampling down the fruit of a mans labour. We got through, and a final circle check before the On-In. A climb over around a gate was a nice finishing touch, but with the pack limping in, bleeding and cut up, it was a testing experience!

So nine months in wet soggy England did not inspire me to run – so back to Chiang Mai and already 60 Km of scouting & running this week – my feet certainly getting me know I should have put more into staying fit!

Dr Byte likes long runs … with girls! Considering the smog season and the brutal heat was somewhat relieved that it was not me haring another long run … so Dr Byte and GM Big Top team up to present a mini-Ball Breaker for the CH3 1000th run weekend.

Mr Poo has been doing his best rain dance for the last month and to BmY/Big Top worst fears – the deluge from hell came while they were setting the run! 6.5 hours it took to set and even then they missed a bit (yep I spotted the fresh paper on the 3rd leg). So BmY after a killer set, trudges back to check and re-set – all respects to hare commitment!

So a good crowd turn up at A (well Sloppy Rob and me were slightly confused) – and we’re transported to ‘A’.

Doesn’t Get It decides hiding in the truck is a better option – so Shagless now only has to worry about the trail. On Out we head past a small lake with black flowers or scum floating on it … bizarre ….!

I just about scramble to the front for a brief moment and then paper is spotted and that the last I see of Brown Finger & Co.

Despite the torrential downpour the paper was OK … some checks it was hard to ‘kick out’ the sodden (or sodding?) paper. Actually I did see Brownie again – about 1.5km in there was a check back that one of the visitors ran through that brought us all together …. Shagless and Humperdick did try and find the real trail but it was a FT!

So as I sank further towards the back with Scooby Doo and pleasantly Anything, Knockout and Couger.

Good scenery and even a bit of a cooling sprinkle of rain – pretty good, and after 4.6km hit the first beer stop with Knockout and BmY reveling in my anguish of descending his nasty gully.

Quick re hydration then off for leg 2 – the best of the lot scenery wise and very good undulating trails (no hills really) – all very pleasant and that took us to 8.3km by the second beer stop.

Knockout was suffering from the smoke – seems Poo was doing great, so great in fact I never saw him the whole run! Oh well KO is much nicer and along with Anything and Couger enjoyable trail mates. BmY revelled in delight as he had Big Top and Knockout to keep him company while Scooby, Couger, Anything and me headed off for the final leg.

More great trails/scenery and while the FRB’s came in on the 2:05/10 mark, us DFL’s finished the 12.5km in 2:40. A very enjoyable run – thanks hare (BmY) and GM Big Top for leading a good circle (half of which I missed retrieving my car).

Back into town and the Hash Pub for some serious rehydration – and up now for BmY/Chuckies live hared CH4 and tomorrows CH3 1000th Run!

Cumalot teamed up with Knockout for a run in the Mae Sa valley. It was a familiar location, but it’s been a while since we’ve been there… Last time I recall there being just me, Chuckie and Mr. Poo running the trail set by the same hares. Hopefully they would set the same again and we could have an advantage?

It seems Turkish was the one to get an advantage – he arrived hours early with Square Rooter to start checking some trail out and getting the first few checks sorted. His big mistake was to tell me and so we set off with some checks already loaded. It was a bit tricky though – not entirely comfortable with the area, and memory failing, they switched it up a bit at the start and it was a while before we were on a familiar trail up the elephant shit route.

A bit of a breakaway with Chuckie leading, Brownie, Piggy, Gravy and I taking the route over the hill tops and back down. The memories were there, I knew where we were headed. A V check had everyone confused, with check backs in both ways – and the way I went there were 2 check backs!! Now that is enthusiastic haring! Fortunately I disregarded both and found myself on trail on the road while the rest were confused by all the check backs. I think I went the way the hares had hoped to go, but took my time waiting for Chuckie and Gravy to catch up so we could run in together.

A nice trail, very well marked, fun in an area we haven’t done for a while.

Sunspot teamed up with Krap Thai, and I was expecting a short leisurely jog. Out past Maerim, there was a sizable group of FRBs turned up to play. With smokey air we were hoping for rain that didn’t come. Turkish led a group for an immediate short cut with Sups & Graven skipping the first couple of checks. Local knowledge I guess told them there was no way through a quarry. Either way we were bunched up with powder hard to find in places.

We crossed a creek a few times, and we started trying to figure out which side of it we were. I was a bit disoriented, and a late circle check on a bridge took an age to find. 4th time lucky, Gorf had missed some powder where he checked first, and with the 2nd blob around a corner 50m further on, it was no wonder we didn’t pick it up quicker. I led the way back into the rice fields, towards the aqueduct… I still wasn’t sure which side of it we should be, so when I had a circle check, I was too slow to go and check. Sure enough the trail took us over the 700m or so. A narrow path with water rushing one side and a steep cliff the other. Yes, there was a rail, but I opted out and picked my way through the paddy to scramble back in.

I wasn’t expecting 7.5km, but it was good one.

Brown Finger teamed up with Chuck Wooooo at the last minute to put together a “serviceable” run. A familiar run site, with familiar trails around in Ob Kham – where the Happy Hash 400th run was.

We were set off down the hill and after getting a couple of checks right to begin with, things went down hill and I got caught up behind a large pack scrambling up a steep cliff. Up one, down one, up another and we headed up towards the ridgeline. Turkish led the way on a familiar trail – only we couldn’t hear him – as usual. He’d got himself whistle, but probably didn’t have enough puff to blow it. Sloppy Rod, myself and Graven Image were on the chase, and finally we pulled him back and had a chuckle as he hit an obvious false trail.

From then on it was the 3 of us working as a team out in front. The trail was quite fun catching us out from time to time as it was marked in leaf coloured paper strips. We were nearly back, but it was too soon, so we cut off to the right and the trail was suddenly on fire. Some hashers turned back, but most leapt through the flames and followed what was left of the trail the other side. Shortly later it was time for another fire jump and we were back on the unburnt side.

We could smell the finish, and as Sloppy Rod checked wrong at the last check, Nam Ron finally caught us and joined us for the On-In.
