Skid Mark Part #1!

It’s the Skid Mark food hashing tour of Chiang Mai, and a trip out to Guenthers – that’s fine for those of us who’ve been there before, but some had some challenges getting there. Nonetheless after Sups had his toilet break we were set off in a familiar direction. First check – a circle with 3 options. I went wrong, while BF had it nailed and sped off, only to be slowed down when trail briefly ran out. Turkey managed to parallel run his way to the front, and he spent quite a bit of time running somewhere near to the trail.

We headed into the rice fields, but we were on a good trail and it was good running. Semen Sores, Able Semen & I Grow Cocks were following the leading group of myself, Graven, Brownie and Turkey. A Byte of Turkey with Brown Gravy? We cycled the lead and gradually slipped away from the pack, and at the last check it could have gone either way with Graven picking right, and me going straight. I missed it the first time, which confused the chasing pack, so when I did find the paper, I was able to cruise away, past Skiddy and through some serious shiggy to the On-In. A great, flat run.

The GM was feeling lazy, so she left me to run the circle.

Being hash cash sucks! Some people not paying, some showing up at the last minute… Complicated pricing structures… So I wasn’t in the best of moods when I set off after the hare brief. And worse after the hare sent us in the wrong direction. We scrambled through some shiggy with the pack in reverse order. It was a bit of a struggle following the powder at through the overgrown field, but normal order was restored by the time we hit the roads. Pace was quick, and I nailed a couple of checks, only to be thwarted by a false trail – due to budget cuts we didn’t get painted sticks, just a couple of bits of paper to indicate the true trail.

We past the hare on his bike, and presently came to a tricky check. It took quite a while to figure out and the pack was brought back together, only it wasn’t as the FRBs still managed to get off the front. I was trapped in a bamboo thicket when the call came, and was chasing up the hill. Fortunately there was another false trail up ahead, and I could take advantage to get back into it. Turkish Delight got to a check first, and chose completely the wrong direction – maybe that’s why he normally just follows the rest of us.

Things were working for me, and I nailed a few more checks, including by large quarry that had Graven sprinting off determined he was right – he wasn’t but didn’t come back. Through a little creek I found an alternative way to get back on trail. So when HRA lead the pack to the On-In he looked bemused that Graven and I were stood there waiting for him!

All in all a good runners run! I might have put a bit more into it than wise given this morning’s 10k.

Square Rooter teamed up with Brown Finger, Big Top & Toe Sucker to bring us a ‘dirty’ new year run. With so many minds working together, what on earth would they come up with?

We set off and there were no checks for a kilometer, that was straight down a road – a fast start! Then turned abruptly and started up the hill, crossing onto some familiar trails that we’d run from Ob Khan before. Up to a ridge and the trail kept turning left – how? Several checks had me foxed because I expected us to end up running into old trails, but nope the sly hares had found another way down and I fortunately got lucky as we hit the checks at the bottom of the hill. A long flat section had Graven “following” me at the checks, along with Alice who was full of inside information!

We started scrambling up into the hills again, but now the checks were getting easier – unfortunately for me Sloppy Rod & Alice hit the front, along with “Grey Ham”. I preferred to hang back with Fandango, but we all managed to come in at the same time as the walkers on their walking trail. Except when I say “All”, I lie – as one visiting hasher didn’t make it back to the A. With the GM & hares exploring the hills in the dark, the circle was tough. Turns out the hasher was already back at the hash pub drinking beer.

All in all, a great run with plenty of challenge and a good warm up for next week’s ball breaker!

I remember Turkey setting a great run from behind the new convention centre – it pissed it down, but it was still a good run! I had high hopes…

We set off in the wrong direction, but whatever! The first check split the pack between walkers and runners – no more walkers for us! The rambos had a climb up the mountain, and as Brown Finger had scouted the same area, so he knew where the trail went, he took off. He’d let slip that he’d seen paper in advance, so I just followed him, and fortunately got away from Horny’s annoying jingling like a motherfucker.

After a decent run, we all got completely confused when the wimp rambo rejoined, and we all found our own ways down the hill, not knowing which trail we were following – except BF of course – he knew where to go!

Why does Cool Balls hate us? We were lacking some of the FRBs away at the male outstation, but we’d be fine. When I arrived at the runsite, no one was there, and ominously it was the place Big Top had picked for her highway run a few weeks before. I was confident Cool Balls would put something decent together – until I heard that he only found out he was hare the day before… Uhoh!

I jogged off with Brown Finger, and we tagged our way through the first few checks, with Big Top, None of Your Business and Humperdick just behind. The trail was up, and when I say trail, I am being generous. It was a scramble through jesus trees, with the occasional bit of paper to encourage us we might get out of it alive! Somehow we hit a road in the middle of nowhere and ran up it. I hit a 200m checkback off a V check, and never saw Brown Finger again.

I could hear him ahead from time to time, but the checks needed to be broken again, and soon enough None of Your Business, Humperdick and I think Crap Thai joined me at a check that really shouldn’t have been as hard as I found it! I checked all over before I followed NOYB down a steep hack. NOYB took off like a pubescent kid trying to outrun his Dad for the first time – an ambition that was just beyond him this time… 😉

I’ve spent a bunch of time (>80km) scouting for the Ball Breaker, and I’ve ruled out “trails” that were much better than this! Perhaps I should re-evaluate? 😉

Wooly was the hare behind Wat Umong, so I dashed back from work for it… Then I found out Foxy was the co-hare, and immediately questioned my decision! My memory was of a 3 mountain gruelling run Foxy had set not so long back here – surely Wooly wouldn’t be so mean? Chucky and I power walked up the hill to the first check – which of course I got wrong! We were heading straight to the main Wat Umong hill, and the nature trail. The hares amusingly caught CW following trail on the side of a ridge while everyone else passed by on the perfectly good trail just below him. Then they caught Poo out by deviating from the obvious path for about 100m. Somehow I was back at the front!

It was up the usual trail (which poo had used in reverse on the previous Monday). The checks were quite predictable, which let the FRBs breeze away from the pack and there were 4 of us left when we got back down the other side of the waterfall. A bit of checking and we were back within 3km, and within 30 minutes running! Nice kind hares, letting us have it easy with many out of town!

With a Bunny Outstation, there was a smaller than usual group gathered close to the football field on canal road. Wiping Humperdick’s last run from my mind, I reassured myself that he normally puts in a good job. After introducing the all new “K” check, we were set off towards familiar trails.

I’ve set runs there, I’ve ran many runs there, this would be easy! Nope… First check had me hopelessly in the wrong direction. I got back into it by the 3rd check, and sure enough I went 180 degrees from the right way. It was a trend that was to continue. I was feeling fresh and good, so put some efforts in to get to the front, and each time I did I ran into false trails, or checks that I screwed up! Notably, I got the false trail, and on the way back I clambered up the wrong hill finally hearing the on-on from the other side of the valley. Again later, I was trapped the wrong side of a ravine while the FRBs were cruising away on the other side. I’m not sure I could get it more wrong!

I got to the point of not believing myself. So when I got to a check, with Square Rooter, I thought which would be my last choice? Because that’s probably where we’re going. Sure enough I charged down a steep hill – again 180 degrees from the true trail.

An excellent set – a lot of fun! The circle was great too – that’s why we hash!

I Got Gas setting a run in Maejo, but not from the mansion! He teamed up with HRA, and following the hash signs reminded me of a scouting mission that HRA and I abandoned a few years back. This time the hares had got us permission to run in the grounds of the Maejo University farm! I remember previously thinking ‘there must be some good trails here’, so finally we’d find out!

Hare brief (not so brief) over we set off and there was a nice little downhill stretch – knowing there would be uphills later, I took off only to get the first V check wrong. None of Your Business was briefly ahead till he flunked the 2nd check. Turkey managed to get ahead through his usual Silent Running strategy – fortunately it didn’t last long! Heading right, perhaps we were going to use the paper we’d seen on the road on the way in? I’d thought it was a decoy, but it turned out it was part of the trail – useful information, as I got to that check first and led the way.

Things were going well for me, and the pace was fast – very fast for a hash! Then the young visitor suddenly appeared behind me, somehow managing to chase me down! He had some form, and when he hit the rest of the checks right, not even Brown Finger could catch him. Yes – Brown Finger was back – great to run alongside him again! The run was 35 minutes, with the uphill finish the worst part, but a good work out, and easily long enough given the heat and the pace on flat trails. A nice set, with many trails we haven’t used.

So, we had a virgin hare, but she’d recruited the experience of Wooly Jumper, so surely it would be ok? A nice runsite, with a nice garden for the kids to run around in, but it was ominously close to the main roads, so I wondered where the run would go! Sure enough we were directed out onto the main road, so I ran along with Banana Wiggler for a bit. Paper continued a long way along the main road, until I got to the On-In! Hmmm… Something was wrong – it had seemed like we were following the paper the wrong way – always being behind the tree, not in front of it…

I turned back and we started exploring other random turnings, looking for paper. Suddenly Anything ran off in the direction of the On-In… huh? That can’t be it – I’ll jog back and ask the hares what to do – perhaps the directions should have been left on the road, not right – an easy mistake! I got back to the “A” (having seen the On-In), and there were no hares! The beer cooler was looking at me, but I resisted and went back to look for paper. Graven, Humperdick, Stan and I mingled around for a bit and then set off back towards the OnIn – if necessary we can do it backwards, right?

Just before the OnIn the trail had changed and was now leading down a small soi, just next to the OnIn… Damnit! I had 2.5km on the GPS and I hadn’t seen a check yet! The chase was on, and Graven & Stan took off ahead of me. I soon started catching people, and slowly made my way through the walkers. Surely there would be a check soon that would slow them down? It dawned on me that the hares had made the rookie mistake of many DFLs. When they get to circle checks, normally there is paper leading away from it, so to save the FRBs the hassle of kicking checks out and laying paper for those following, the hares had decided to do it for us!!! Such kind hares!!!

With no chance of catching the leaders, I set a steady pace and just kept jogging. Eventually I hit the main road, and jogged for about a km before I saw the On-In, and then another km or so back to the A. I did a bit over 7km, and most of it was on the main road! I do remember a short loop through an orchard though…

Mr Poo seemed like the obvious choice for setting a full moon run, and with a late addition of Square Rooter as co-hare, the man who knows every trail in the Huay Tung Thao area, surely they would put together something special. It was dark and late, but at least it wasn’t raining! Full Moon? Nope… Well it made a brief appearance during the circle.

With torches bouncing we set off, straight towards the tarmac running track. A couple of early checks told us what we had in store – it was well marked, easy to pick out the powder in torchlight and as we got to the check at the back entrance to the lake, it was a make or break check. I followed HRA’s calls to the right, and it was along the running track. Inspired haring! On a daylight run we’d bitch about the bitumen, but on a night run it wasn’t quite road but safe and easy to run along.

Knowing the area the next couple of checks were obvious and we set off on the mud trail that I’ve run so many times before – only this time it was dark, and muddy and full of puddles. A smallish group had broken away at the front, and we got back together with a tough check by the horses stables. It was a no-brainer that we were heading to the right to cut across back to the running track, but it was hard to find the way through in the dark. The hares knew it and were waiting on the other side just in case they needed to rescue anyone.

Back along the running trail to the A. It’s always nice to try something different, and it was a carefully thought out set.
