Brown Finger teamed up with Chuck Wooooo at the last minute to put together a “serviceable” run. A familiar run site, with familiar trails around in Ob Kham – where the Happy Hash 400th run was.

We were set off down the hill and after getting a couple of checks right to begin with, things went down hill and I got caught up behind a large pack scrambling up a steep cliff. Up one, down one, up another and we headed up towards the ridgeline. Turkish led the way on a familiar trail – only we couldn’t hear him – as usual. He’d got himself whistle, but probably didn’t have enough puff to blow it. Sloppy Rod, myself and Graven Image were on the chase, and finally we pulled him back and had a chuckle as he hit an obvious false trail.

From then on it was the 3 of us working as a team out in front. The trail was quite fun catching us out from time to time as it was marked in leaf coloured paper strips. We were nearly back, but it was too soon, so we cut off to the right and the trail was suddenly on fire. Some hashers turned back, but most leapt through the flames and followed what was left of the trail the other side. Shortly later it was time for another fire jump and we were back on the unburnt side.

We could smell the finish, and as Sloppy Rod checked wrong at the last check, Nam Ron finally caught us and joined us for the On-In.

Graven decided to set a live hare run, and to decrease the chance of being caught he signed up Brown Finger as a co-hare. He also brought in Pig Shit as a co-co-hare, although the latter denied any knowledge of the route and would run with the pack. It turned out later that the hares also seemed to have no knowledge of the route and got themselves lost.

Brown Finger had already disappeared, but after 5 minutes headstart we set off after Graven. At the end of the road, I turned left, and went about 150m before finding the trail – sneaky hares! The trail abruptly turned left towards where I knew there was a lake – it was suspicious, but I figured I’d play the game and duly went to collect the spare paper at the False Trail.

Clearly the hares can’t read Thai, as they took us straight through a gate that stated ห้ามเข้า. No choice but to carry on. Into the woods, there was a circle check in the middle of nowhere, only trees, no trail, but from memory I knew there was a wider trail straight ahead, so I ploughed on through a bit more than the 100m. When I got to the trail, I checked down to the left, and then as hashers were calling I went back up to the right, and sure enough the paper emerged from the trees and headed on up the hill.

A single trail heading up, with occasional circle checks off to the side – each just returning to the main trail up up up up. And at the top was the “BN”. I was on my own, nobody around – would I get to drink all the beer? First I had to find the beer – and just past the BN was a circle check… Huh? Where was the beer? Oh, there was a somewhat obvious bag right next to the BN and in it the Tiger juice. I had some time to wait for the rest, so I figured out where the circle check was going back to, and kept yelling for them to follow me up the hill.

Finally Poo showed up. When Square Rooter got there, he ignored the beer, and headed off in the wrong direction – let them go! Back again, and we headed down the hill on a different trail. When we got to the road at the bottom, a circle check had been replaced with a Wimp Rambo split – no mention of that in the hare brief! The Rambo took us back to the ห้ามเข้า gate, where the hares had put even more paper over the poor family’s yard. A bit further on, and a circle check was suspiciously next to a ant infested log bridge, that I straddled my way over with Poo following, only for trail to be found in a different direction. We were back in the forest on the old trail, and as Chuckie led the pack back up the hill, I thought better of it, and finally None of Your Business found arrows and trail back through the trees again. He took off like a whippet, and we were soon back to the Wimp Rambo split – only this time it was just an arrow heading up back in. Confused? We all were! Especially the co-co-hare Pig Shit who led Dead Virgin all the way back up the hill and finally limped in in the dark.

It seems the hares had screwed up from the start and spent all the time trying to fix their mistakes. None of Your Business celebrated at the On-In his victory!

The directions were out at the last minute, with apparently scouting / setting happening the night before – perhaps literally at night!

Nonetheless we set off out past Doi Saket, and the HHH signs were hidden and I twice drove past signs – luckily Danny was paying attention the second time. Hare brief given we set off across a field, and at the first check Brownie and I both spotted what looked like it might be paper off to the right – we were right, and he was off like a greyhound, nailing several checks in a row.

We seemed to be going around to the left and there was a big group heading along smoothly together – brought back together by some hidden skiddy sticks – there were no skiddy sticks, but on more than one occasion the hare had abruptly changed direction, and the racists at the front ran straight past the turn, like a flock of lemmings.

Up the side of a hill to a temple, only to cut straight back down the other side and out onto the road for a couple of kms back on the road. My shoes have now been tossed, and hopefully the new ones will work better…

Suckit teamed up with Itchy, Poo and Knockout to organise the 500th run outstation – some ways towards Chiang Rai. When I eventually found the resort, after driving back and forth along the highway, most were ready and waiting. Perched on a little hill there was a spectacular vista all around. What did Suckit have in store for us??

I led the way through the first few checks, with the help of inside information – from my cabin I’d seen some white spots on a trail that was about a km away – now that is a well marked trail! Things were going well with Brown Finger forced to take the false trails each time, until finally my luck ran out and I was behind. We turned into a little valley, and at a circle check the pack spread out. Brown Finger climbing up a steep hill, while most headed off into the gully to the right. I headed left, and to my joy hit trail that curved around the base of the hill.

OnOn, and onto another nice trail that climbed into the trees, only to once again be thwarted when we deviated steep down to the left. Not far later I caught the pack at another circle that had everyone scattered. This time I wasn’t so gleeful to find the trail leading steep up a rubber tree lined mountain. It wasn’t far up, but mentally it was tough and the groans came from everywhere. When we got to the top, all we had to do was go back down the other side – equally steep, but lined with straw for a soft landing, and almost enough trees to swing between on the descent. From there the hares had put in yet another hill, but this time it was the hill with the resort sat on top. Nice run, in a completely new area!

We were out at a new runsite off the Sameong Road, at a nice little resort that I remember visiting about 10 years back. Right at the far end (away from the other visitors) we parked up next to a little creek. Hare brief over we set off down the side of the river, and quickly got to a familiar circle check… – the bottom of the 990 steps to the temple on the hill. On the plus side, I’d got my bearings, but on the downside getting there from a different direction meant I had no idea which way we were going – was it up the steps? Perhaps… So I set off up, out of ear shot of those calling OnOn down below. Bugger!

With few checks it took me a couple of km to catch the FRBs as we worked our way up a gruelling climb (not the steps, but near them). The Wimp trail looked tempting, but the hares had lovingly put in an extra ridge for the runners and I duly obliged. Back down and we hit the rubber wall – along the wall, and into the quarry before along the edge of the ricefields. Cunningly disguised trail had us grouping in the fields before Brown Finger, Graven and I led the way out via the bamboo bridge. Except Graven didn’t take the bridge and left Brownie and I to run through the village together. We took our time waiting for Graven to catch up, only for him to appear in front of us, short cutting bastard!

Fun circle and another good hash.

Brown Finger decided to not have 1 co-hare, not 2 co-hares, but 3! Teaming up with Graven, Robin Banks and the absent Krap Thai surely this would be some event?!

We set off towards the Tiger’s head in Maejo – None of Your Business was feeling fit and confident. A couple of visitors and some virgins, plus an influx of Dutch boosted the post-outstation turnout. We were set off into the low trails – lots of good checks, and I got plenty of them wrong! The hare brief perhaps hadn’t cleared everything up for the virgins, and there was some confusion as they were towards the front of the pack. Some local knowledge kept me in the action though.

We’d been told it was an A->B, and it set off as though we were going to head due north perhaps to Praphats farm? Were we going to turn right and up to the Tiger head? Then all of a sudden we turned left and headed back along the trails and into the village. And it seemed like we were heading back towards the A – never trust the hares!

I was upfront with a strong running visitor, Amanda. After 7k we got to the Wimp Rambo split, and that confirmed my suspicion that we were heading back to the start. Sure enough I got the next few checks right and even did the dummy False Trail that was pretty obvious. Finally we got back to the “B” – about 100m away from the A. Nice job hares – 9.25km!!

Skid Mark #3

If you are going to set 2 runs in a weekend, why not set 3? Seriously folks – that is a hell of an effort and deserves huge respect. Thanks Skiddy for a great weekend of hashing!!!

So how about today’s run? He’d been building up to it with the previous 2 runs and had hinted today’s would be something special – enough that I crept my way out of work and got to the runsite. We’d been here before, but not for a long time. It was an A->B, which always mixes things up.

I set off in usual style, and Brown Finger joined me at the front. The first check was after 700m or so and I guess I got it right… – at least I found some paper in a rice field and another circle check. I can’t be sure if we got there the way the hares intended, but what the hell! A bit further on, another circle next to a ‘bridge’ type thing that crossed some fast flowing water. It’s Skiddy, so of course we had to cross it right? Yup, and I was On-On past a paddy field to the road. Things were going well for me, and I hit another couple of checks. When I finally got one wrong it was Graven Image, Brown Finger and Turkish Delight mixing it up at the front.

We caught up with Sunspot who’d been given a huge short cut, but apparently confusing instructions…. – “At the V check take the RIGHT path”, which could have meant the path to the right, or the correct one. Anyway, bloody hell the pace was moving along fast. Less that 6.5mins per km is not a bad running pace, but when you add in the hashing checks etc. that’s moving along. Several times we thought we’d lost Turkish, but he was doing a great job of keeping up – calling when he got ahead and kicking checks out when he was following (Poo might argue that he kicked the checks in the wrongd direction, but perhaps Poo should run faster and get in less fights).

Finally we got to a strange “Wings and Other Things” or “Short Cut” check… Huh? We were close, and after a couple of twists and turns, we emerged and found the beer. A great 8km A->B run and in my opinion the best of the weekend’s runs. Thanks for the 3 runs!

Skid Mark Day #2

This time Skiddy had teamed up with Robin Banks, and neither looked in a good state when they finally showed up at the A site. It seems they had both picked up some stomach issues, so we could tell there would be a shit time ahead!

Looking around there were some fit runners – virgins and visitors, so we were in for a challenge. I set off as usual with Brownie, across a soaking rice field, weaving around the worst of the muck, until we got to a trail the other side. It seemed a long way without a check, and eventually Brownie surged ahead with a 100miler visitor. A tricky check later and everyone was together, paddling through a creek to get to a new road – I diverted around the side and found trail at the other end. We then went into the orchards section – again some challenging checks – quickly figured out by a large fast pack of FRBs. The pace was quick given the terrain.

We were turning back towards home as Brownie jumped over a ditch towards a seducing lady, we chased after him as he picked a few checks right in succession. But as the trail twisted and turned randomly through some trees, the pack closed in as the leader tried to pick out the route. A circle by another rice field – it had to be across it – right? I set off, a long time without a call, until eventually HRA found it heading around the edge. I lucked out again as it curved around to where I already was, and with only a couple of obvious checks to go, I was to the OnIn.

A really fun run, and circle, with a good group of visitors getting into the spirit.

Skid Mark Part #1!

It’s the Skid Mark food hashing tour of Chiang Mai, and a trip out to Guenthers – that’s fine for those of us who’ve been there before, but some had some challenges getting there. Nonetheless after Sups had his toilet break we were set off in a familiar direction. First check – a circle with 3 options. I went wrong, while BF had it nailed and sped off, only to be slowed down when trail briefly ran out. Turkey managed to parallel run his way to the front, and he spent quite a bit of time running somewhere near to the trail.

We headed into the rice fields, but we were on a good trail and it was good running. Semen Sores, Able Semen & I Grow Cocks were following the leading group of myself, Graven, Brownie and Turkey. A Byte of Turkey with Brown Gravy? We cycled the lead and gradually slipped away from the pack, and at the last check it could have gone either way with Graven picking right, and me going straight. I missed it the first time, which confused the chasing pack, so when I did find the paper, I was able to cruise away, past Skiddy and through some serious shiggy to the On-In. A great, flat run.

The GM was feeling lazy, so she left me to run the circle.

Having done a 10k this morning, I had limited energy left! I remember a Scooby Doo run before where we had a bit of a hill scramble, but I had faith that today he would be merciful – nursing his injury afterall. From the Baan Pong resort A site, I was hoping we would stay on the flatter area around the rice fields and after the harebrief we were headed in the right direction!

Running was a struggle, jogging was tricky, but I got to the first circle with Brown Finger, and he took the trail to the left. I was right! Only to be foiled by the next V check. Everything in me said – run through the check back, as surely we would be back on trail, but I turned back only to get back to the road moments past the check back. Cumalot and Itchy short cut their way along the road and appeared in front of Skiddy and I.

A dog joined us, and I used him as a sniffer dog – he worked well! We did a good job of sniffing out the checks, even though I took a slight alternative route at one point that brought me back in front of the pack. The dog didn’t realise it’s harder for humans to crawl through a barbed wire fence, but when I got through I was clean away. Only to get the next check wrong. But thankfully Scooby took us through the valley that I know connects the rice fields with the Kings project. We’ve run it before – a couple of years back, but since then I’ve been trying to figure out just where the connect fits. Today I got it wrong, but I won’t make that mistake again!

I rejoined the pack as they were confused by checks at the King’s Project – durrrh! It had to be right! No way were we going around the other side of the lake, and there weren’t many other options, so I paralleled along the road and sure enough met up with everyone at the dam. My energies were almost out but it wasn’t quite far enough yet. With runners checking down the road and across the dam, Skiddy and I took the path down below the dam, and when Skiddy called the powder he set off like a Jamaican sprinter after a injection boost. Brown Finger caught me by the next check, and while I followed Skiddy back towards the resort, BF called OnOn further to the left. I pretended I didn’t hear and kept on back to the A. I could hear the pack circle around further, and knowing the trails there, it sounds like it would have been the ideal way for Belly to finish last years Ball Breaker.

A great set, well marked and very enjoyable. The circle started off well! Thanks hares!
