A reasonable turnout, given the time of year etc. But while there were plenty of walkers, it looked light on the FRB side… ABB took up the early running, racing to the first check, when he paused seemingly bemused. I past and headed up the hill and found trail, quickly on my own. I was aware of a virgin called Jack somewhere behind me, but it wasn’t until I got a couple of checks wrong that he and Toe Sucker caught up. The start was a steep climb up and presumably that decimated the pack.

When I caught up with Jack & Toe Sucker, they were stood at a circle discussing which way they should check. Toe Sucker was adamant she was just going to wait at the circle, and pointed out which ways we should go. I was wrong again, and caught up at the next circle where again they were discussing what to do. Screw that, I took off and finally got a check right. When we hit the road, it was clear he wouldn’t send us back up the road, so the only reasonable option was over heartbreak hill. Sometimes I don’t like being right. Its been a while since we’ve been over it, but it is always a tough one. Near the top we had the option of cutting down and going along the road, but nope, the hare wasn’t that forgiving, he was taking us right over the top.

Finally we hit the down hill and it was easy running all the way back. A great trail… Well marked… and a well ordered circle. Nice Job PS!

The start of a new era – Frozen has gone, in with ABB. All week we got emails advertising his run and I got there expecting something special. Meaejo – the low hills before the Tiger Head. I am somewhat familiar with the area – and it is always a good run.

I set off ok, getting the first check or 2 with Piggy not far behind. Then a circle that I just got plain wrong. Most people passed and I slowly caught people as we climbed up the hill towards the tiger camp. Inevitably we got to the 5 trail junction and Poo was leading Piggy there. Normally hares put a circle right at the junction, but Sloppy mixed it up and went 50m down a trail before putting a circle. Bluff? Double Bluff? Triple Bluff? Poo turned back and checked back from the junction (twice). Piggy was a long way off. Kwazi appeared short cutting from another direction, which left me to do the “obvious” trail past the circle. I was On and clean away as the trail turned sharply down the hill. I accelerated with dreams of grandeur.

Sadly I got some checks badly wrong as we got to the bottom of the hill, and while I had some gap ahead of the pack, they quickly caught up as I ran backwards and forwards. The whole pack swept past and I had nothing left to give.

Excellent set that had the FRBs repeatably confused. Pretty much all of the pack came in close together (and ahead of me!). Job done!

Super Bitch – 1,000 Runs… Wow – more runs than any other female in Thailand, and clearly our 2nd highest in Chiang Mai. I’m sure Belly could fill in some more statistics, but today was an historic, memorable run for that alone.

Chilly Pussy teamed up with Anything for the run, and I really enjoyed it. It was a runner’s run. Fast tempo. It definitely could have had some more checks, but I grumble about that more when I lose the FRBs. Today I set off strong and nailed the first few checks. Good kudos to Pigshit for checking the false trail on the V check when he must have known I was on true trail. I guess he was confident that he would catch me sooner or later, and of course he did.

The heavens opened and we all got soaked, but it cleared up nicely by the time we finished the run. The run was a nice set – ideal for the occasion. All the ladies seemed to produce food for after the run too.

Congrats to Super Bitch. How about 2,000?

Square Rooter, the wily old fox, outfoxed this hasher today… :( I know the area fairly well – so I think, so I predicted the route and figured I had SR covered…

We set off as usual up towards the TV station, but then a surprise circle. I got it right but then called Rooter’s bluff at the 2nd circle – it was a double or triple bluff and I was headed up the wrong trail – I’d been right before that strange circle… :( So it was up the regular “Pilgrim’s Trail”. Ahead there was Lanky Yanky, Chuckie, Mr. Poo and Piggy. The trail headed off to the right and people were checking a circle. I know this area – even if the main trail was wrong, you HAVE to get back to the main trail, or there is no way back. I carried on figuring I’d intercept sooner or later. Rounded a corner and found Mr. Poo taking an opportune shit in the bushes. He encouraged me to go back, but I continued my plan.

I could hear calls off to my right, so continued my pilgrimage. Finally I got to the temple – there was no sound of anyone, and I knew completely that I’d fucked up – badly! I just uploaded my trek to strava though, and it has me as the 2nd fastest ever on the trail to Palad temple! WTF!!?? Just 21 seconds slower than the fastest! Enough about that – I wasn’t racing – I was trying to get back to trail… So when I hit the road, I headed back down the hill for a km or so. It was great – the first time in a long time that I’ve felt comfortable running – it was much cooler. Finally I found a trail and cut across and sure enough hit a circle check – sadly it was fairly early on the trail and I was a long way behind having done a 3km detour… Anyway, I was back to black ants biting on Rooter’s trail.

I kept moving along, and got to the W/R split. Decisions, decisions…. I went wimp – it was already 55 mins… The trail cut down and finally I saw Frozen Dick, Tip Toe, Cuckold and Belly Dancer down below. When Belly heard me running behind he figured I was the first of the FRBs on the Rambo trail, and decided to try to outrun me…. Hehehehee! Oh his disappointment when he found out the rest of the pack were already supping beers at the finish.

Nice set… bad screw up!

Crappy at HTT had people nervous… He’d set part of it in powder, and with a late afternoon storm had to live hare the first section. Sadly he took off towards the waterfall…. Aaaargh! I remember setting a terrible run up there, and going on others that were also terrible – I don’t recall a successful run heading that direction before…

We discussed sitting around drinking instead… It was hot and humid… Finally we thought we ought to give it a go, and we all strolled off casually towards the inevitable. First circle check predictably at the bottom of the waterfall. Choices here are to go into the base of the waterfall, which gives you a treacherous climb up – made more deadly by the rain on the slick rocks. I picked the steeper trail up the right of the waterfall… Steeper to begin with, but in the end its a better route… NOYB spotted the hare going up the waterfall, but I was the first to find him sat waiting for us. Now that check was a gimme – I know there is nothing good to the right – to the left isn’t much good, but it certainly wasn’t going to be further up.

We hacked our way off to the left and at the next check we all went straight up to where the nicer trail was. Sure enough we started heading down. Graven was right behind me for a while, but nipped past – it wasn’t easy going with the rocks hidden under damp leaves. The down was interrupted by a check taking us back up and across before finally cutting down the the main trail. To the right and NOYB was off like a racehorse. A visitor also breezed past. I’d have to go for local knowledge. A check out onto the rice fields. Most hashers wanted to go to the village, but that made no sense – how would the hare get us back? If we went into the village we’d have to come back the way we drove in, and the hare had no time to lay that trail and the out trail, so we had to get back to the ‘main trail’. I was alone checking through the ricefields, but with such a large space, it was a long time before I found trail. Up on the main trail, I jogged in, knowing the rest of the pack would be trying to chase me down.

Not a bad trail at all… – it’s just a shame the connect off the waterfall isn’t there… I wish I could find it…. Maybe I need to go searching again? muahaha…

Guarantee a good write up, by the hare running home and scribbling some notes:-

—-

A thank you from Alice the hare to Yanksoffalot for excellent scouting last Sunday and Does Nothing for his sterling efforts today setting the run thru the hottest hours of the day11:15-14:00….

Huge qudos to the FRBs Slopps, Graven and HRA for coming home in 55 mins as Does Nothing bet me they’d be in after the 60 min mark, and I erred on the side of rampant athleticism and competitive streaks! Never in the field of human achievement has a combined age of 160++ covered so much ground so fast and gracefully….ish.

Sorry I forgot to mention use of Belly’s square white plastic back check sign, BMY didn’t see it and lost vital yards and seconds on those checking left up the path into the doi.
Was shocked to see Shagless, Dead Virgin and Baldrick emerge on the W in-trail after 30 measly minutes but they refound the R trail and did the whole jobby. Nice work lads.

Taste my Buns and HRA shared immortal glory with the virtual wings and Poo and BMY traded funny insults over going AWOL and stand in GMship. Turkish was so happy to first runner in but as DN observed, “First runner to run the whole walkers’ trail!”

Karaoke with Knockout and Cumalot at Baan Suan Him Doi was the icing on the aural cake and
all part of the rich experience.

Enjoyed the labour, the company and the comments…mostly!
On on,
Alice

Virgin hare, but not a virgin area… Mr. Poo and Knock Out had set runs here so recently that their signs were still there yesterday! I had some children logistics, but by chance managed to make it there, and with time to spare! Hare brief told us about some checks, but didn’t help much with what was coming up! Bring in the virgins to explain how we normally do things, and then do it a bit differently!

I set off and Jacksoffalot put in a bit of a jog. I heard a visitor behind asking if it was ok to run or not, so upped the tempo to a brisk trot. It wasn’t long before he breezed past me. A circle check slowed him down and I got first choice at the 2nd circle. Dumbass mistake – I picked right, down the hill and ended up a long way back. The trail headed up a bit and I finally got back with the FRBs when we got to a confusing “V” check. Normally the arms of the V point the directions to check, this V check was just bizarre. Most of the hashers were milling around listening to Chuckie give one of his classic lectures on international standards. I headed after Poo and Graven in the obvious direction – towards the mountain. Graven veered off, and I followed Poo (well over 100m) to find powder coming in from the left. Were we right? Not sure… WTF, lets call it!

Next check we all got right, but then I got caught up the wrong side of a waterfall… I seemed to keep getting into places that were hard to get back from. Following Knockout uphill was fine until she stepped out the way. I caught up again when a circle confused everyone as there was a false trail coming off it… We spread out into the trees, and when it was called, I was screwed. A big shiggy scramble back to the trail and I was way behind.

From there it was a solid run, slowly picking off hashers, starting with Human Ex who is skilled at blocking narrow trails. The trails were good, I really enjoyed the run and the route. Generally I worry about the runsite because of the inevitable climbing, but this set was largely runnable, and a lot of fun. Excellent creds to the hare.

Hare Humperbert (sic) teamed up with Squrootley (sic) for a creative, scenic set from the circular reservoir above the orchard behind the hillside Buddha temple retreat. Getting there was a bit fraught as my wingman Yankoffallot goes 25 mph max on his bike…and I don’t. Despite being passed by the Songtaeo on Hang Dong Rd we beat them to site as they turned up the Night Safari link to Canal Rd.
Beer Monster TipToe was delayed and various lightweights depended on Chucky for 4 WD lifts to get up the dusty, rutted hill.
First check was a bastard. Stiffy and YoA checked up the hill with Alice confidently advising it was the only possible option. What do I know? Very little, as the trail was back 30m and off to the right heading down on a track strewn with macheted saplings.
C Wao, Graven, and Stiffy shared FRBS duties as the checks were pretty sneaky and had Rooter written all over them according to Sloppy Rod!
Baldrick made a surprise appearance and all was going well under leaden skies as we headed down a burnt path to a powder circle check and that’s when the world started to unravel.
I checked right up a long, steep path in on orchard and heard others shouting faintly from elsewhere. Figures scuttled around below me but progress was not being made. Suddenly a faint on on in the wind and everyone disappeared! I made my way down and the heavens opened and a gale set in. I found the almost washed out circle with central stone but no paper anywhere! Yikes. The pack had disappeared, swallowed by the tempest.
I tried to follow the path on the left side of a steep ravine and checked into the abyss for sign of life or paper when I could. Suddenly a green figure on the hillside above me and a washed out check on the burnt soil bank. YoA was also left behind but on paper. Together we bashed into the horizontal rain, desperately searching for paper at every cross path. The weather worsened, trees bent level, paths were under water, chalk washed away and hail rained down like bullets. It was not a good time to be out on a hillside with little idea of how to get back….
Somehow we managed to find trail and the forest offered a little protection. A familiar ish 5 way junction, must be a washed out check, but luckily small squares stuck to leaves leading up. Down over the grassy hummocks, well marked with paper, finally, and onto another flooded pathway. Nothing to the left, one half piece of paper right after quite a distance and a surviving splodge of powder. Relief. It was gloomy and still hammering down as we followed trail by luck and judgement until we hit a barb wire fence and went through onto another winding hillside trail under the trees but into more open ground. As we split again to trudge through the mud checking for signs, I suddenly saw the welcoming sight of Sloppy, Rooter and Humpers? on a rescue mission. Sloppy and Alice still managed to turn the wrong way back towards the W-R split before a 180 and a soggy trudge back to A.
Circle was fairly low key, Alice enjoyed catching up with Sups, Suckit with new bits, Kwazi with old bits, Baldrick etc. Good nosh at Yabba Dabba Do and an appearance by Frozen Dick. Lots of regular hashers notable by their absence, hopefully clearer air will entice you back! Not to mention Alice and YoA’s challenging trail this coming Saturday!
On On,
Alice

Today Humps teamed up with Shagless, but openly confessed that Shagless did all the work for the run – was it trying to remove responsibility before we even set off?

I set off running, and I guess Belly was really hungover as he didn’t do his usual early stages sprint, to the point I was confused as I was completely on my own. A “V” check, I guess left. I went 400-500m and then got a check back. This was strange… It was a small check back – not completely clear, but far too far from the check. After some confusion and regrouping it turned out I’d missed a 2nd V check.

Problem solved and we carried on. Graven & Chuckie leading the way with me, NOYB and Taste My Buns. Not leading I fell into a groove leaping ditches and finding my way through orchard trees. There was a brief moment when trail was lost up front. NOYB solve the problem calling on on from around the corner along the road – only he didn’t, because there was no check and we’d just headed off paper for someway, essentially shortcutting. Not a big problem for us, but Dogshit someway behind and Alice & Jacksoffalot didn’t get the benefit of the short cut, only getting checks that weren’t kicked out.

It happens. Next check, I got it right, and I’m running well. Circle check – I went right and along the canal. Too far… I turned back and Belly was calling onon having short cut across. What to do? I was so tempted to carry along the canal, and had I done so, I would have hit trail about another 20m. Instead I went back and around in a circle. Lots of technical hashing – jumps & balances. After 30 mins we hit the OnIn – the groan from NOYB behind me was the groan of a boy that believed he could have beaten his Dad if the trail had been a bit longer. It would have been longer had he not lead the mass short cut.

The run was quite ok considering the conditions, but my highlight of the night was the 16 year old “None Of Your Business” asking the veteran Superman quite openly & frankly in a restaurant at the OnOnOn whether he still regularly masturbates.
